"The philosophy behind the MME keel (Mickey Mouse Ear) as it was called in the 70's where some sound principleswhich would still stand today.

1:The reduction of the size of the root chord assists with reducing the quarter wave generated at the root under heel.
2:The efficiency of the foil is reduced over the top and bottom 25 percent of the span, as a result one can conclude then that it is most efficient in the remaining 50% in the middle. Then it makes sense to increase the foils size here and reduce it in the ends, in order to get maximum lift with minimum drag.
3: There are always three loops to consider in a keel design.

1: Hydrodynamic requirements
2: Ballast requirements
3: Structural requirements.

In this particular keel 2 is nearly completely in the bulb and 3 is taken care of by a H.S. Steel sparleaving the shape of the foil moulding free to choose from. The keel shown is a custom one, and not one normally supplied with the boat. It is not an ORC optimizedfoil (pretty opposite in matter of fact) as Orc gives certain rating advantages to larger RC foils. It's is unlikelythat this foil is going to be used in European ORC events. "

Intressant.
