Segla entyp - J-24 World Championship 2018, Fraglia Vela Riva, Lake Garda

97 J-24 besättningar har samlats på Lake Garda för att göra upp om världsmästartiteln. Jag sätter nog min peng på Mike Ingham. Alltid i topp.
J-24 klassen är också en klass med mycket mixade besättningar. Här är mixen dessutom över generationsgränserna vilket är grymt kul.
VM i Malmö 2010 i Västra Hamnen är fortfarande ett grymt fint minne. Vilket jobb. Då var det 56  besättningar.

Självklart håller jag på klubbkompisarna i Per-Håkan Persson och gänget i Front Runner men också på Max Holzer och Marianne Schoke som är med Mike Ingham.

J-24 World Championship 1985 Japan - Intressant att kolla hur tekniken att driva båten ändrats

J-24 World Championship 2016, Wakayama, Japan

Få entypsklasser kan köra VM i Japan men J-24 klassen kan. Två gånger tidigare har man kört VM i Japan och sist det begav sig var 2001 i Osaka och första gången var redan 1985 i Atsumi Bay.
Max Hölzer, MSS, är med ombord på USA 5362 Cougar med den amerikanske skippern Will Welles. Första racet gick bra med en 6e plats men i andra har de fått UFD som jag inte vet helt hundra vad det betyder. Tror det är samma som DSQ.

En kul detalj i sammanhanget är att arrangören har tryggt alla deltagarnas båtnamn på en handduk. Inte många som varit i Japan och seglat VM.

J-24 World Championship 2010 in Malmö - Tim Healy and his crew won the Worlds

The hole fleet went out for racing the last day. Two races were planned, Race #9 and #10. The sun was up for the second day and the wind was blowing from the south and the current was moderate and going south. New conditions again.

Tim Healy had clear lead and was favourite for the title World Champion.

Ian Southworth winner of the 2nd price in the World Championship took an early lead in the #10th race which he also defended all the way to the finnish.

The best swedish team with Per-Håkan Persson, winner of the 8th price.

Really nice to see the close action and full fight also in the last races.

It has been a fantastic to be part of this week and meet all top sailors. It feels good to be able to close a 2 year long job driving the project from Malmö Segel Sällskap point of view. Thanks to all that has contributed in a positive way.

J-24 World Championship 2010 in Malmö - there will be Moose hunting today

Tim Healy with his crew has a clear lead before today´s races. The last days of the world championship. Yesterday we had first day without rain and sun showed up in the afternoon. The wind was stable as well.
Moose McClintock, one of the worlds most famous sail trimmers is one of the guys in the crew. The field behind will definitly hunt the Moose today.
Moose McClintock third from the front are complaining about the weather on Sailing Anarchy. Something I do not understand. He is at least sailing. ;-)

J-24 World Championship 2010 Malmö, Day 3 race 5 and 6

Peter Reggio, Annika Ekman, Thorsten Peech, Ulf Malmborg and the crew onboard the startship had a real challange today. Races were postponed already in the harbour today.
Not because of lack of wind but to shifty conditions.

After the first beat in the second race the wind shifted so much that going downwind became more or less a run. The argentinian crew in 5454 had a bad day with a 11 and 22.
German crews fighting against each other all along the course.
Starting today was easier than yesterday. Current going north created a big bow and the crews in the middle were far away from the starting line. Yesterday it was the opposit. Every race seems to get new conditions during this championship.

Best swedish crew today was SWE4896 with Per-Håkan Persson ended up with one 15 and one 10. The team had second place to defend from the first beat end first reach. Shifting conditions were to difficult.

In the fourth race the results were delayed because of protests. Tim Healy USA 5235 that was first in the fourth race was first reported for Black flag in the preliminary results.
This was not correct and was later changed.

J-24 World championship 2010 Malmö, day 2 - Race 3

The swedish team with Anna Gunnarsson got a convincing lead in the third race. Todays conditions were rain again, with shifty winds. 8-10 knots of wind from North west.

Short after the finnish the SWE 1080 had a short lunch.

Wonder if they weighed in the umbrella as personal equipment.

The wind turned 90 degrees during the 4th race start and wind started to be heavy and rain increased. We left them to their destiny.

J-24 World Championship 2010 in Malmö - First racing day

With a hard wind blowing from the North today meeting the current created quite tough conditions outside Västra Hamnen in Malmö. The wind was blewing between 20-28 knots in the first race. Quite demanding downwind but surely also a lot of fun.

The wind was expected to decrease but remained the same and maybe also increased a little in the second race.

Very close to finnishing line shows how small margins it is. The two first boats in second race. The argentinian crew won clearly the first race.


The current direction going towards the wind direction created short and high waves.

The first race today had quite hard winds with gusts up to 14m/s. Some crews made real chines gybes with the mast top close to the water. Some boats were near to loose some of the crews to.

J-24 World Championship 2010 in Malmö - Tune up race and the boats entering Västra Hamnen

Malmö Sailing Arena in Västra Hamnen is a fantastic place to watch the races. The picture shows people watching the tune up race. Very light winds and in the end it became nothing.
25 of the over 50 J-24 the fleet was lined up and it felt really mediterranian. Malmö City had done a great job to protect the bows with fender lining on the concrete.

J-24 World Championship - measurement days

The measuement process in J-24 Class means you have to measure the keel profile. First year here in Malmö it was decided to check the amount of lead in the keel with metal detector.
One boat was sent home as it was manipulated in the keel. Another boat owner had laminated lead in the the bottom stiffeners. Both were rejected. Mary Anne Jardine and Carl-Henrik Oskarsson at the measurement station. The couple Stuart and Mary Anne Jardine had a fantastic routine in the measurement procedures. Great Help from Brittain.
The empty weight is also measured. First day the crane was stuck due to a mistake from one of the crews in Grynet. Shit happened the best. Our young sailors did a great job in working over the weekend.
Friday and the line up started to become a mess and Gösta Wiik had to use some straight forward wordings to get order. Gösta Wiik who was in charge of the measurement process from Malmö Segel Sällskap point of view had a great help in Krister Ahlkvist.
Gransegel, the sailmaker in Malmö, let us use their loft. This helped a lot and Mattias, one of the sailmakers, made a great job in correcting sails.
Gabor from Hungary was excellent keeping control of the standing rigging.
Saturday gave us a terrible weather with thunderstorm and a really stady rain.

J-24 World Championship 2010 in Malmö - Final results from Swedish Open and BS Lagunen in Malmö

Yesterday me and Hugo from Australia were watching the races from land in Västra hamnen. A rainy day and the summer was all of a sudden gone. It looked like the current played a vital role yesterday. Seemed to be around around 1 knot.
Team Front Runner in SWE 4896 with Per-Håkan Persson convinced by winning race 7 yesterday. Really fun to see that their efforts starts to pay off in results.
The brittish team with Ian Southworth, GBR 4265, had an uneven series but some real nice results. One of the top crews definetly.

It´s always easier to sail with the top boats than being further down in the fleet. Let´s stay there Per-Håkanand Team Front Runner. ;-)Mike Ingham US finnish four. Also one of the top teams. Mauricio Santa Cruz and the Brasilian team has a good track with no disturbance on the left side. The team wins the Nationals, Swedish Open.

Next week there will definetly be a fight among those boats. Today it is time to get ready for the measurements. All boats on land in Limhamn.
